A quick welcome
If you are travelling on Grand European with me as your Travel Director, this page is here as a simple extra layer of practical context before we meet.
It is not meant to replace your official Trafalgar information. Think of it as the useful, real-world version of the questions people often still have in the final week before departure.
It is a big trip, but that is part of the fun. A little preparation at the start makes it much easier to settle in quickly and enjoy the journey once we are on the road.
Before you go
This is a dynamic 21-day tour running from London to Paris through 11 countries and 26 cities. The more organised you are before Day One, the more enjoyable the trip tends to feel once we get moving.
Check your joining details
Make sure you know your meeting hotel, the morning joining time and what is included at the start and end of your booked version of the tour.
Keep essentials easy to reach
Passport, cards, phone, chargers, medications and any travel documents should stay accessible rather than being buried in your main suitcase.
Expect a moving tour
Grand European covers a lot of ground, so travel days, hotel changes and early starts are part of the rhythm. Packing and planning with that in mind helps.
Arrival and onward plans
Take a moment to double-check your arrival arrangements in London and your onward plans from Paris so the edges of the trip feel easy as well.
Staying connected
Hotel Wi-Fi is usually enough for messages and basic planning, though quality can vary. If you prefer mobile data, it is worth sorting roaming or an eSIM before you leave.
Weather and general feel
The route moves from the UK through central Europe and down into Italy before finishing in France, so conditions can vary a lot over the course of the trip.
Layers win
Rather than packing for one forecast, think in layers. Mornings, mountain areas and coach days can feel very different from warm city afternoons.
Bring a proper jacket
A lightweight waterproof or weatherproof layer is still worth having, even on a summer departure.
Comfort matters more than style
This is a sightseeing-heavy itinerary with uneven streets, stairs and long days. Good shoes will matter more than anything clever in your suitcase.
The pace is dynamic
Trafalgar lists this tour as dynamic, which is fair. It is a brilliant route, but it rewards people who arrive ready for movement rather than a slow resort-style rhythm.
What to pack
Most people are happier when they pack a little less for a tour like this. Practical, comfortable and easy to manage usually beats "just in case."
Essentials
- Comfortable walking shoes you already trust
- Layered clothing for changing conditions
- A lightweight waterproof or weatherproof jacket
- A small day bag for travel days and sightseeing
- A reusable water bottle if you like having one handy
- A universal plug adapter, or both a UK Type G and continental Europe adapter
- Optional: wired headphones for audio devices on some sightseeing days
Packing smarter
- One manageable suitcase is much easier than one oversized one.
- Think in outfits that work together rather than packing for every possible scenario.
- Keep anything important for the day in your smaller bag, not the main case.
- Laundry is often worth doing once on a longer tour instead of overpacking from the start.
Staying connected
WhatsApp is usually the easiest way for us to stay in touch during the tour. It works well over hotel Wi-Fi and keeps things simple when we are moving across multiple countries.

Money and practicalities
Cards are widely accepted across this itinerary, but a few small practical details are still worth knowing before you go.
Currency
The tour starts in the UK with pounds sterling, moves through plenty of Eurozone countries and may also involve some local spending in places such as Switzerland. A card that works well internationally makes life much easier.
Cards and cash
Cards are usually the easiest way to pay. It can still help to carry a small amount of local cash from time to time for toilets, quick snacks or smaller purchases.
Gratuities
Many standard service costs are already built into the tour, but gratuities for your Travel Director and Driver are usually treated separately unless already covered in your booking.
Hotel styles vary
Over a route this broad, hotels will vary in size, layout and character. Some will feel modern and simple, others older and more individual.
Security
Busy stations, city centres and major sights are the places to stay sensible with passports, cards and phones. Nothing dramatic, just the usual good awareness.
Optional experiences
Optional experiences are introduced during the tour once the timing and logistics are clearer. They are there to add to the trip if they suit you, never because you need to do everything.
On the road
The coach is our moving base between destinations. A few simple habits make those long travel days feel much smoother for everyone.
- Bring a small day bag with what you actually need while travelling.
- Main suitcases go underneath and are not always accessible again until hotel arrival.
- Seatbelts matter whenever the coach is moving.
- Comfort stops are planned, but it still helps to think ahead for water, tissues and any medication.
- Shared timings matter, especially on a route with lots of moving parts. A few minutes here and there adds up quickly on a long tour.
- Travel days run better when everyone is on time, especially on a route with border crossings, city access slots and booked sightseeing.
- Your Driver plays a big role in both safety and timing, and legal driving-hour rules shape how the day is paced.
Trip talk
Tour language can sound a little vague until you have done one, so here is a plain-English version of a few common terms.
| Term | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Orientation | A practical introduction to a place so you know the layout, key points and how to use your free time well. |
| See | You will pass or view something important, but not necessarily go inside it. |
| Visit | We are stopping there properly, often with time on site. |
| Optional Experience | An extra paid activity offered during the tour if it suits the day and suits you. |
| Free time | Your time to explore, slow down, shop, eat or simply not do very much at all. |
